Ends justify means.
Madison Clark, "Minotaur"

Madison Clark, also known as Maddy or Miss C (by her students, before The Fall), originally from Alabama, was a guidance counselor at the Paul R. Williams High School in El Sereno. Prior to the zombie apocalypse; she helped students prepare for their future. She brought up her two children after the death of her husband Stephen Clark in a traffic accident. [1]

Madison was described in the initial casting call as "a thirty-something single mom to two kids", and "looks like the girl next door, but there's an edge to her".[2]

Madison had a troubled relationship with her father, hitting him during an argument at the age of 13. Eventually, she shot and killed her alcoholic father when she was still a child because of how he beat her mother. The killing was not uncovered by the authorities.

She attended college and worked as a bartender to pay for her student fees. Eventually, she met and married Stephen Clark and got a job as a guidance counselor.

She was a single mother to her two children after the suicide of her husband Stephen Clark and had a miscarriage between the births of Nick and Alicia. She worked as a guidance counselor at Paul R. Williams High School and was said to be popular with the students. One of the English teachers there, Travis, was her fiance.

Like many others, the apocalypse brings up issues from her past that had been long buried, and that she now has to deal with. It has also brought out that "edge" in her; she is one of the people who can see the difficult decisions that are needed, now that the world has changed, though she's not always as quick to take those decisions.[1]

Personality Edit

Her character is changing as time goes by. She puts down the headmaster (Art) of the school where she works, with some skill - after a slow start. She kills Celia Flores with little or no hesitation and no regret at all, and was willing to expel the remnants of Brandon's Group from the Rosarito Beach Hotel until Travis made that moot.

Madison mobilises the Abigail to search for Connor's group, and tries to reassert her control over Nick.

"Sicut Cervus" Edit

At sea The Abigail approaches a Mexican flotilla that is guarding the border.

In The Wheelhouse, Luis prepares to meet with his military contact on the flotilla guarding the Mexican border and pay for their passage. Strand sees military officers approaching in a boat. Concerned that a second officer is coming as well as Luis’ contact, he orders Madison to hide everyone below decks.

From the engine room, Madison’s group, that is everyone aboard except Strand and Luis, listen to the conversation between Strand, Luis and two officers from the Mexican flotilla, Daniel translates for the group. Gunfire is heard after the officers insist on searching the boat to make sure no Infected are aboard.

When the lights go up and the engines start again, Madison’s group charge upstairs. Strand steers the Abigail toward the Mexican coastline, as they near the coast the flotilla stop firing on them, abandoning the two officers who boarded The Abigail, Strand says, to Madison, that this is because the flotilla think that whatever is on land will kill them anyway.

On land, Strand leads Madison and the group inland, they go inland far enough for some members of the group to be asking Strand if it's much further. They find a pile of dead parishioners in front of the church, the bodies are being eaten by a dog. Strand spots Thomas’s truck and calls Thomas’s name, he runs around in panic looking for Thomas and calling out for him. The group fight off a herd of infected parishioners who arrive because of the noise.

Madison is overcome by one of the Infected and is fighting for her life. Chris starts forward to help but then watches her struggle from a few steps away and does nothing, he doesn't appear to be frozen with fear, he just watches. Alicia screams at Chris and steps in to save Madison herself. The group piles into Thomas’s truck and leaves. Nick doesn't move until his mother calls him.

Strand drives them to the Abigail family's gated estate where the gate opens automatically as the car approaches. Inside the gate people are calmly working in the vineyard and near the main house, Celia, Luis’ mother, greets them.

At the main house in the kitchen, Nick tells Celia that Luis asked for her when he died. Celia calmly explains that the dead have always walked amongst them. “The only difference is now we can see them,” she says. Madison overhears their conversation and later warns Celia that Nick is impressionable.

Madison brings food to Thomas and Strand in their room. Thomas asks Madison to look after Strand when he dies, she doesn't refuse exactly, but she stops short of promising to care for Strand.

Madison confers with Travis about Chris and worries that Chris is sick. Travis defends Chris and angrily wonders why Madison won’t offer the same support to Chris that he always gave Nick. They argue and end up sleeping apart; Madison decides to sleep in Alicia’s room for protection while Travis sleeps with Chris.

That night, Chris enters Alicia’s room where Alicia and Madison are sleeping and says Alicia’s name. He picks up a knife from the bedside table, as he does so a gunshot wakes Madison and Alicia. The women see Chris holding the knife and Alicia screams at Chris to get out; he runs outside.

"Shiva" Edit

She is present when everyone runs to Thomas’s room, where Strand has just shot Thomas in the head. Celia screams at Strand for shooting Thomas instead of allowing him to turn. Celia forbids Strand from burying Thomas and attacks Strand when he declares that Thomas wasn’t her son. Celia orders Strand and those he brought along with him to leave by the next day.

Madison tells Nick and Alicia to quietly pack supplies so that they can flee to the Abigail and escape Celia’s clutches. Alicia refuses to return to the boat. Nick defends Celia.

After Nick returns to the estate with an undead Luis, Madison confronts Nick about his fascination with the dead and asks if Celia told him to find Luis. Nick argues that Celia merely wanted her son back then offers to bring Travis back, as well. He tells Madison that the Infected will not touch him. “I will not die,” he declares.

Madison tells Strand that she’s worried about Nick. Strand is unsurprised that Celia was able to indoctrinate a young and vulnerable addict. He invites Madison to join him on the Abigail, but she refuses to leave without Travis.

Madison implores Celia to let Strand stay. Celia refuses and tells Madison that she must learn to accept the Infected just like Nick does. Madison asks Celia to help her understand. Celia takes Madison to the cellar and enters the cell to show Madison all of her infected present. Madison closes the gate, locking Celia in.

As Madison finds Alicia and Ofelia, a fire suddenly consumes the estate. Madison runs into the storage room and sees Jorge unconscious on the floor and leaves him in search of Daniel but leaves to save herself.

Strand pulls up in the truck and urges them to get in. Nick walks up to Madison and says he couldn’t find Travis. He suspiciously asks where Celia is. She doesn't answer. “She was right about us,” he says. “We destroy everything.” Strand forces Madison into the truck as Nick turns his back on her. They watch a blood-slathered Nick walk away untouched among the Infected as Strand and the women flee the compound.

"Grotesque" Edit

"Los Muertos" Edit

Madison, Alicia, Strand and Ofelia drive around Tijuana in search of Nick. Alicia calls the search futile and insists they return to the The Abigail. Reluctantly, Madison agrees.

They arrives at the shore and find the Abigail missing, stolen by the Mexican military Strand assumes. Alicia suggests they take refuge at a nearby hotel. Before they leave the beach where they landed, which still has the the Abigail's Zodiac sitting on the sand, using driftwood, they write a message for Travis and Nick, "Abigail Lost Head North."

They drive to the Rosarito Beach Hotel’s pier and assess the situation from afar.

Madison’s group pulls up to the hotel and enters the lobby through barricaded doors, behind them, unseen, an Infected watches them enter the hotel from another building and claws at a window. Strand rings the bell at the front desk to flush out any Infected. No reaction though, from either the dead or the living.

Madison’s group looks for supplies in the hotel ballroom.

In the hotel bar, Alicia and Ofelia leave to search the hotel rooms above for supplies, Madison tells Alicia "No" but she goes anyway. Strand offers to make Madison a drink.

The two drink martinis at the hotel bar.

After a while, Madison and Strand move on to Tequila, get drunk and tell each other their life stories, or part of their life stories at least. Madison tells Strand about the death of Nick and Alicia’s father Stephen Clark: he was driving home from work and his car drifted into oncoming traffic. Strand assumes he fell asleep but Madison explains that, despite what she told her kids, she thinks their father killed himself. She worries the same darkness lives in Nick.

Madison flings her glass against the wall, pours more drinks, then flings another glass. Strand bangs on an out of tune piano.

Across the street, a trapped group of Infected pounds on the door of a gift shop, provoked by the noise in the bar.

Infected begin to swarm the hotel bar, Strand eventually notices.

They fight the Infected and become trapped behind the bar.

"Do Not Disturb" Edit

Madison appears in this episode right at the end, she opens a locked door to save Alicia from a group of the dead (as she did for Nick in "The Good Man"). She lets Alicia and Elena in, then hugs Alicia.

"Pablo & Jessica" Edit

The episode begins with a flashback to Madison and Strand trapped in the hotel bar. They fight the Infected but clearly aren't going to be able to do that for long.

Madison puts down an infected man and covers herself with his blood, telling Strand to do the same.

Unnoticed by the dead, they carefully make their way out of the bar, closing and barricading the door behind them.

Going outside to look for Ofelia and Alicia, they see that the truck has been taken.

Having difficulty finding another way into the hotel without keys, they climb a scaffolding up to balcony and re-enter the hotel that way.

They find them at the top of some ornate stairs in the lobby of the hotel spa, they talk about what might have happened to Alicia and Ofelia, Strand comforts Madison, saying that Alicia is self reliant and can survive. Madison acknowledges what Strand has said, and adds that she, Madison, made her daughter that way. She clearly does not see this self reliance as evidence of good parenting.

Later, cleaned up. Madison is listening to the dead bang on the outside of the door while Strand collects water and food.

While they're talking they hear someone, a live person, banging on a door to be let in, and yelling. They rush to find that person, who turns out to be Alicia, with Elena Tobar and Hector.

They break down the door to the tunnel and let them in, then barricade the door closed.

Madison wants to go looking for Ofelia, Strand points out that they don't know where to look and Alicia tells her that it was Ofelia's choice.

They look at the small quantity of food and water they've found. Elena tells them that the food stores in the hotel, dried and canned goods, will last "for months", but that the main stores are under the control of people who want her dead.

Madison and Strand go to talk to Oscar, after some discussion they are let in, without their weapons, and go up to talk to him.

In the hotel Madison and Strand meet with Andres Diaz, Oscar Diaz and Ilene Stowe. Oscar and his people have not seen the hotel as a valuable place to stay; Madison points out that it's a remarkable resource - and that the dead need to be cleared. Oscar's starting point is that Elena has to go. Isabel is still deep in grief for her daughter, Jessica Diaz, and cannot listen. Madison warns Oscar about the other, violent, groups that they've encountered and says that they will be clearing and fortifying the hotel no matter what, but that they'd appreciate the help. As they're leaving Oscar gives them the set of master keys he got from Elena in the episode "Do Not Disturb".

Madison and Strand talk, she can tell that Strand is not happy and draws him out - he tells her that he will help secure the hotel, but that it's not home.

Later, Hector, Victor and Alicia are clearing the 7th floor. Alicia puts down an infected girl. They are clearing the hotel room by room, taking the bodies down to the beach and burning them by the pier; Madison is building a fire, others from the hotel have joined in.

She and Alicia talk about the size of the task and the need to get it done fast. Madison doesn't want to clear the hotel only to have it taken from them. They also talk about what was said in the bar when they arrived at the hotel.

Alicia sees something, a sign on the pier, and wades in a little. The sign says to beware of the riptide, and Alicia says that they don't have to clear the hotel bit by bit, that they don't even have to put the dead down.

At the hotel, they are planning how to herd the infected through the buildings. Alicia wants to take her mother's place on the pier but Madison says no, that she needs Alicia on the boat. They talk some more and Alicia tells her how she'd mistaken a dead woman in the bar for Madison.

They embrace and then part, going through the hotel, making a noise and attracting the dead. Hotel room doors are propped open and the dead herded down through the stairwells - they bang on pots and pans to attract them.

Madison leads the dead onto the pier, the rest run ahead. Andres closes the door of the hotel behind the last of the dead.

Alicia and Hector take the hotel lifeboat out to sea by the pier and wait while Madison leads the dead further onto the pier.

Near the end there is a section of pier without a handrail, she leads them all the way to it and then jumps. The dead follow, tumbling into the sea.

Alicia and Hector pull Madison from the water as the dead follow each other into the sea.

At the hotel they are sharing a good meal, though Ilene and Oscar are noticeably absent. Victor goes to get Oscar from the honeymoon suite, where his dead wife is locked in. They talk and Oscar tells Victor they met at UCSD. He tells Victor he won't let him touch her. Victor doesn't argue. They talk about loss and how it changes you. Victor asks Oscar to let him help Jessica.

Oscar gives Victor the key card for the room where his wife is and Victor goes in. We hear what used to be Jessica growling, but don't see her before the door closes behind him.

"Pillar of Salt" Edit

At the hotel, Madison's Group and Oscar Diaz's Group work together to secure the hotel and build a refuge: They fortify the front gate, plant and water a new garden, fish off the pier and power up the generator.

Alicia works hard taking surfing lessons from Hector and talks to him about Nick. Hector reveals his own brother is lost to him as well after falling in with a Tijuana gang.

In Elena Reyes’s hotel room, Madison, Strand, Alicia and Elena discuss progress so far and decide to run the generator for just a few hours a week, enough to make ice and boil water. Strand answers a knock at the door and Ilene Stowe stabs him without warning'; she says “You took my daughter from me”.

Madison tends to Strand’s wound in bed. Oscar Diaz brings over Andrés, a medical school student. Andrés examines Strand’s wound and says he needs a suture kit, antibiotics and erythropoietin. Elena says that all of the local pharmacies have been emptied, but suggests a place that might have what they need.

Madison tells Oscar that Ilene must remain locked up indefinitely. She also declares that, going forward, anyone who harms anyone else at the hotel will be banished.

Madison, Elena and Oscar get in a van to drive to El Pelicano, the supermarket run by the Los Hermanos gang.

On the road, Elena explains that Hector’s brother, Antonio Tobar, lives with the narcos. She says Hector has never forgiven Antonio for choosing the gang over his own family.

Madison, Elena and Oscar arrive at El Pelicano with a cooler. Elena tells the guards that she has something for Antonio. They allow Madison and Elena to enter.

Madison and Elena give Antonio a cooler full of fish and ice and request the medicine for Strand in exchange. Antonio asks if they can provide more ice. Elena agrees. Antonio tells them to wait. Meanwhile, they hear Marco yelling in an upstairs office.

Upstairs, Marco interrogates his captives, Francisco and Ana, about the location of La Colonia. Francisco assures Marco that someone will deliver the Oxy.

Madison and Elena overhear Marco’s interrogation. Madison asks Elena to translate for her and runs upstairs when Marco describes an American with “ratty hair” who delivered drugs to them.

Desperate for news of her son, Madison barges into the office and demands the name of the ratty-haired boy. Francisco forbids Ana from answering. Marco orders them out. Antonio gives them the medicine and tells them to stay away, saying they won’t be at the supermarket much longer.

At the hotel, Alicia lays a blanket over Strand and compresses his wound. She explains that she helped Nick through his detox withdrawals and says that Madison still doesn’t fully see her. “Then make her,” Strand suggests.

Madison, Elena and Oscar return to the hotel after dark. Madison runs to the generator and turns it on, lighting up the hotel sign in the hopes of signaling Nick. Alicia warns Madison that people will see the sign from all around and accuses Madison of thinking more about Nick than her, even though Nick chose to run away.

"Date of Death" Edit

A mob of survivors bang on the gate of the Rosarito Beach Hotel after spotting the lights that Madison turned on the previous night. Madison, Alicia, Elena Reyes, Oscar Diaz and Hector stand guard, refusing entry. People plead to be let in but they refuse, then Madison sees Travis in the crowd and he pushes forward to the gate.

At the hotel, Madison opens the gate for Travis but keeps the other survivors out. They embrace as Madison leads him away from the gates.

Travis stares despondently at the ocean from a hotel balcony and asks Madison where Nick is. Madison says that Nick ran away, then asks where Chris is. Travis sits on the bed, emotional. “I had no choice,” he says.

Back in the present, Madison assures Travis that he didn’t have a choice and reminds him that Chris is still out there. Travis tells her he regrets not telling Chris that he loved him when they parted ways. Madison holds his hand.

Madison goes to the parking garage and finds it filled with survivors. Andres explains that they let the 43 survivors in and are examining them for infection.

Alicia finishes examining a survivor, a woman with a bruise on her back from "a bat", for bite wounds. Madison takes her for a walk and on the pier, tells Alicia that her father’s car accident was really a suicide.

Alicia reels from the news and asks how she can be sure. Madison tells her about the note found in the glove compartment and, after Alicia insists, tells her the note read "I love you all, but enough’s enough." Madison explains that she didn't tell Alicia and Nick because she wanted to protect Nick, who she worried would end up like his father. She says the only reason she paid less attention to Alicia over the years was that she believed she was doing alright. They hug.

"Wrath" Edit

Travis wakes up in Madison’s hotel room. She tries to make him feel better about leaving Chris and invites him to join the rest of the group downstairs when he's ready.

Madison checks in with Alicia, who is taking care of survivors in the parking garage. Alicia expresses her disdain for Brandon and Derek, who are loudly disparaging the Mexican patients and complaining about having to wait for treatment for Brandon’s dislocated shoulder.

Madison tries to quiet Brandon and Derek down. She asks what happened and learns that Brandon hurt his shoulder in a car accident after they let their 16-year-old companion, a kid from Los Angeles, drive without a license. They say the driver died in the accident. Madison realises that they are the men who Chris joined up with.

Madison tells Strand that Brandon and Derek are in the parking garage and that she suspects Chris is dead. Strand discourages her from telling Travis, as it would destroy the only thing that keeps him going. It’s the same hope Strand lost when Thomas Abigail died. Madison agrees that the news about Chris would break Travis.

In the parking garage, Madison tells Brandon that Andreas will require privacy to fix his shoulder. As they escort Brandon and Derrick away, the other survivors complain that Americans are receiving preferential treatment. The crowd becomes unruly.

Travis hears a commotion outside and sees a mob of survivors following Madison as she escorts Brandon and Derrick to the gate. He runs outside and demands to know where Chris is.

Travis and Madison take Brandon and Derrick to the hotel cafe. After Andreas fixes Brandon’s arm, Travis interrogates them about Chris. They explain that they were tired from avoiding bandits and Chris offered to drive the truck so that they could catch up on sleep. When he veered off the road, the truck rolled, Chris was thrown from the truck and died on impact.

Travis asks where Chris was buried, and Derrick says they pulled him from the wreck and buried him under a tree. Travis notices discrepancies in the two stories. He locks Madison and Oscar out of the cafe and begins to get physical with Brandon and Derrick, demanding the truth. They can only watch as Travis beats them both to death

"North" Edit

Madison returns to the cafe and stabs Brandon and Derrick through the head, preventing them from turning.

Strand tries to dissuade Madison from speaking up for Travis, who Elena wants to banish. Alicia and Madison decide to leave the hotel together with Travis. Strand refuses to join them.

Madison tells Elena that they will leave with Travis in the morning and asks her to release Travis from captivity. Elena feels she owes Madison and allows it despite Hector’s reluctance.

Madison enters the game room where Travis is locked up and tells him that she and Alicia will leave with him in the morning.

That night, Madison joins Travis on the balcony of their hotel room and assures him that Brandon and Derrick deserved their fate. She says that she too killed someone — Celia — in order to protect Nick.

Oscar dies on the operating table. Andres slams his fist in anger. Hector seethes and rants to Elena that Travis is safe and sound upstairs. Elena reminds him that they made a deal with Madison.

Hector and Andres barge into Travis’s room and beat him. Andres holds a gun to Travis’s head. Alicia stabs Andres, and a melee ensues. Strand grabs Andres’ gun and orders everyone out. “We need to run,” he says.

Travis, Madison and Alicia pile into a car outside the hotel. Strand gives the gun to Madison and stays behind. Travis accelerates and plows through the front gate.

Madison, Travis and Alicia go to El Pelicano to look for Nick. They discover the bodies of Francisco’s family in the back of the empty market, bullet wounds through their heads. They find Francisco’s driver’s license with his La Colonia address.

Madison, Travis and Alicia arrive in La Colonia. While Madison and Travis go to the village, Alicia stays behind in the yard and notices the stalled school bus.

In the town square, Travis and Madison encounter a large herd of Infected, which now includes Marco’s gang.

Madison and Travis find Alicia on the bus, tending to a dying Alejandro. Madison tells Alejandro she’s looking for Nick. Alejandro says that Nick went to the border.

Alejandro dies, Alicia hands Madison a knife. Madison closes Alejandro’s eyes, turns his head to the side and drives in the blade.

Season 3Edit

"Eye of the Beholder"Edit

Armed soldiers drag Madison, Travis and Alicia past dismembered corpses into a military fuel depot. Travis is carted off to a different destination than Madison and Alicia.

Madison explains to Troy that she’s looking for her son, Nick. Madison then demands to know where they’ve taken Travis. Troy avoids answering, but promises to let them go once he's finished "processing" them.

Madison searches the office for a weapon. Eventually, Alicia gives her the knife that she hid in her boot before they were taken prisoner. Madison tells her that she will do any killing that needs to be done, not Alicia.

Troy takes notes in a journal as he sits and watches Madison and Alicia sleep. Madison wakes up and asks Troy if Travis is dead. Troy doesn’t answer. She tells Troy that she loves Travis’ life more than her own.

Troy tells Madison that they're getting ready to evacuate the depot. He offers to release Travis if she and Alicia travel home with him. They hear a gunshot outside and Troy runs out of the office and locks the door behind him.

Troy returns to the office and Madison attacks him with the knife, but Troy knocks the weapon out of her hand. She grabs hold of a spoon and plunges into his eye socket. Madison tells Troy if he tries to break away he will lose his eye. Madison yells for Alicia to find Travis and a vehicle to get out of here.

Alicia sprints outside.

Madison drags Troy outside, holding the spoon in his gouged eye, as armed soldiers surround them. Troy tells the soldiers to back off.

Jake, Troy's brother, arrives and urges Madison to release Troy. He acknowledges that Troy probably brought this on himself, but she's surrounded and has nowhere to go. Madison releases Troy.

Troy retaliates by lunging for Madison. Jake intercepts, and demands to know where Madison’s family is. Troy admits that Travis is in the pit.

Troy brings Madison to the pit, where they find Travis surrounded by the Infected he's put down. Travis gets out of the pit and attacks Troy, but he’s quickly restrained.

Soldiers bring Alicia to Madison, followed by Nick. The Clark family reunites.

Jake offers to take Travis, Madison, Nick, Alicia and Luciana to his family’s ranch. It’s safe there, and Jake assures them that Troy will behave. Madison and Travis reject the offer.

Jake scolds Troy for killing innocent people. Troy insists he was conducting research and says that their father would understand. Jake tells Troy their father sent Troy here for a reason, "Cast one out to protect the many."

Madison and Jake hear gunshots nearby. Infected have breached the gates, and the soldiers are scrambling to keep them back. The compound has been compromised.

Madison and Nick fight the Infected, while Travis and Alicia help Luciana into a helicopter. Troy arrives in a truck and urges Madison and Nick to hop on board.

The helicopter takes off with Travis, Alicia, and Luciana while Madison and Nick depart in a truck with Troy. Troy tells Madison that she'll see them soon, they're all going to the same destination.

"The New Frontier"Edit

Troy blasts music as he drives Madison and Nick to his father's ranch, until Madison reaches between the seats and turns it off. She keeps her guard up, still wary of Troy and his motives.

Troy's convoy of vehicles pulls up to Broke Jaw Ranch. A guard tells Troy that Jake hasn't arrived. Troy orders Madison and Nick out of the truck. He drives inside the gate, leaving Madison and Nick outside looking in.

Nick suggests they backtrack and find the rest of their group, but Madison insists they stay put in case the helicopter arrives. She reveals to Nick that she stole a gun off the truck. They can protect themselves if they have to.

Nick doesn't want to stay at the ranch, but Madison reminds him that this is their best shot at medical treatment for Luciana. Troy's father, Jeremiah Otto, introduces himself to Madison and Nick and orders the guard to let them in.

Jeremiah shows Madison and Nick around the ranch and explains that he initially started the camp to prepare for the fall of democracy.

Madison is critical of Troy, but Jeremiah defends his son's behavior by stating that he was just carrying out his mission at the depot. Sensing Madison and Nick's hostility, he points out that most people would be grateful to be at the ranch.

Jeremiah brings Madison and Nick to their bunkhouse and leaves them with a key, Madison thanks him as he leaves. Nick grumbles about Madison being nice to Jeremiah after his son tried to kill them. Madison admits that she doesn't have a plan yet, but they should bide their time.

The next day, Madison is delighted to see Alicia and Luci. She looks for Travis, then falls to her knees with grief when Alicia tells her he is dead.

Madison sobs in private over the death of Travis. Jeremiah finds her, offers his condolences, and then gently asks her to register the gun that she stole from them. She signs out the gun in his log book.

Nick stands by Luciana's side in the infirmary. He checks in with Alicia and holds her as she weeps over Travis' death.

Madison tells Nick and Alicia that they're going to make the ranch their home, even if that means they must take it over.

Madison, Nick, and Alicia attend Charlene’s memorial at the ranch. Sensing hostility from members of the community, Madison introduces herself to the ranchers and thanks them for taking her family in.

Ranchers demand an update on the helicopter attack, and Jake and Jeremiah assures the crowd that he is looking into the incident.

In line at the mess tent, a man accuses Madison and Alicia, under his breath as he passes them, of being freeloaders. Gretchen, a young woman of about Alicia’s age, introduces herself to Madison and Alicia, then invites Alicia to Bible study. Madison has to nudge Alicia before she accepts the invitation.

Madison finds Troy lounging in Nick's bed in her bunkhouse. He opens up to Madison and says that he picked her, not Nick, to join his community. Madison insists Nick will earn his keep, and puts Troy in his place by making him leave the bed tidy.

In the bunkhouse, Madison assures Nick and Alicia that they can win over the minority of people who don't want them at the ranch. She also warns them to stay away from Troy. Nick tries to insists that they start over somewhere else, but Madison refuses to leave the relative safety of the ranch.

Madison asks Jeremiah to protect her family from Troy and other hostile community members. She goes as far as threatening to expose Troy's twisted experiments at the fuel depot. Jeremiah refuses to tell people how to behave, but offers to teach her the culture of this ranch. He asks Jake to show her his video lectures.

Jake sets Madison up to watch Jeremiah's old VHS video tapes. He promises to protect her family from Troy. Madison tells Jake she wants to find whoever shot down the chopper. He understands her desire to know who killed Travis.

Madison discovers a collection of outtakes from Jeremiah’s commercial. In the video, Jeremiah fights with his drunken wife and yells at a young Troy. She turns off the video when Jeremiah walks in the room.

Jeremiah explains to her that Jake and Troy are children from two different marriages. He admits that he and his second wife were alcoholics and that Troy took care of his mother towards the end of her life.

Madison informs Jeremiah that Nick is an addict. Jeremiah understands, having battled his own issues with alcohol. Jeremiah offers to show Madison why he tolerates Troy.

Jeremiah takes Madison to the "pantry". The Pantry is a massive cellar under Jeremiah's house which is well-stocked with guns and supplies. He explains that he "broke" Troy in the old world, but that Troy now has a purpose in the new world. He has the killer instinct needed to survive. Madison pledges to help rebuild in Jeremiah's new world.

Madison visits Luciana in the infirmary and explains that she doesn't want to leave the ranch because Travis died trying to bring them there. An increasingly well Luciana is still handcuffed to the bed and is obviously not happy.

The next day, Jeremiah announces to the community that it's been 36 hours since they dispatched a unit to investigate the chopper attack. He asks for volunteers to accompany Troy on a search mission to find their men. Madison volunteers.

At mealtime, Madison sits next to Troy instead of eating with Nick and Alicia. She makes a point of laying out a napkin on Troy's lap.

Madison does not appear in this episode.

"Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame"Edit

As Madison helps to load the vehicles, Coop watches her work and tells her how difficult it will be outside the ranch. He patronises her and calls her "sweetheart", she carries on working and tells him she can cope.

Nick and Alicia try to dissuade Madison from joining Troy on his mission to find the missing team that went to investigate the downed chopper. Madison ignores their advice.

She leaves with the group, travelling in the front of the lead vehicle with Troy.

From the car, Troy spots some infected by a crashed prison bus on the side of the road and orders his team to kill the Infected that are gathered around it. One of the militiamen argues that they should stick to their mission, but Madison agrees with Troy that the infected should taken out in case they become a hazard later.

Troy's team eliminates the Infected, giving Madison a chance to prove her fighting skills to Troy's men.

Troy's team arrives at the helicopter crash site and discover that whoever shot it down has dragged it away. They find shells from a gun owned by Phil and deduce that Phil engaged the assailants before retreating to his outpost.

Troy’s team drives to the outpost. On the way, Troy and Madison talk about those they have lost. Madison confides that seeing the place where Travis died has shaken her. She wonders if Troy grieved for his mother after she died. Troy says that he doesn't grieve for the dead.

They arrive at the outpost to find a pile of charred bodies. They discover Phil, partially scalped and babbling nonsensically as a crow pecks at his exposed brain. Horrified, Madison stabs Phil in the head, and insists they leave. Before the militiamen can move, a Native American man named Walker confronts them with his soldiers.

Walker declares that they attacked the outpost to take back the land that rightfully belongs to his people. Walker orders Troy’s soldiers to put down their weapons and remove their boots. Troy's group complies after realizing they are surrounded by snipers. Walker warns them that if they don’t abandon Broke Jaw Ranch they will all die.

Troy's group makes their way back toward the ranch without their shoes and weapons. Madison insists they take a break, but Troy orders his men to keep walking. When Madison challenges him, Troy pulls her aside and says she's not his mother. Madison speculates that Troy’s mother must have hated him. As Troy reels from her words, Madison asks the team if they want to rest. Everyone raises their hands. Troy begrudgingly allows his militia to rest until dawn.

Madison wakes up in the middle of the night to find Troy holding a knife to her neck. She urges him to be a better man. He relents and withdraws the knife.

Next day, The militia trudges down the road with bloody feet toward the ranch.

"Red Dirt"Edit

Nick spots Troy's team, including Madison, hobbling toward the ranch on the long road to the gate.

Nick, Alicia and other ranchers rush out to help Madison and Troy's team, who all have bloody feet from walking without shoes. Jeremiah wants to keep it low key with a private debrief, but one of the ranchers, Vernon Trimbol, insists Troy's team share their findings with everyone. Mike Trimbol announces that a group of Native Americans slaughtered Phil McCarthy and the others from the outpost. Troy tries to keep everyone calm saying they can handle the situation but Mike blurts out that they're all going to die if they don't leave.

Jeremiah, Troy, Jake and Madison discuss a course of action. Jeremiah is angry and blames Troy and Madison for not being cautious enough. Troy insists they should fight Walker, but Jeremiah believes Walker is bluffing. Jake suggests they negotiate with Walker and points out that he beat Walker in court when Walker filed lawsuits in the past. Madison asks if they stole Walker’s land. Jeremiah maintains that the ranch was sold to his forebears.

Madison rests in the bunkhouse. Nick tells her that Luciana went back south.

Back in the Clark's bunkhouse, Gretchen Trimbol tells Madison that her father, Trimbol, is worried about Walker and wants to take the family to a colony in the Rockies. She says he's telling other ranchers about his plans.

Vernon tells Jeremiah that he's leaving the ranch with his family to keep them safe. Madison warns Jeremiah that the ranch will weaken if more people leave.

Troy runs after the Trimbol family's RV and yells at Mike for leaving. Jake stops Troy and they fight. Vernon drives off with his family and his horses.

Troy explains to Madison that Mike was his loyal childhood friend. Madison offers to help him ensure that no one else leaves.

Madison looks on, as Troy gathers a small militia in the pantry and charges them with defending the ranch.

Alicia returns to her bunkhouse after spending the night with Jake. Madison questions Alicia about her relationship with Jake, but Alicia assures her that it’s nothing serious and reassures her mother that they are using contraception.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah leave the ranch on a pickup to search for Vernon's family on the road. Madison reasons that the horse may have escaped on its own but Jeremiah predicts that the Trimbol family is dead.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah find the Trimbols' RV in the road, riddled with bullets. They find the Trimbols infected or dead, put down the infected, euthanise the part eaten horse and pile the bodies into their truck. Jeremiah tells Madison that he suspects Troy killed the Trimbols.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah return to the ranch with the bodies. Madison speaks to the crowd that's gathered to see hem return and covers for Troy; she declares that the people who killed Travis and Phil have now killed the Trimbols. She warns that anyone who leaves the ranch will die and urges them to stay together. The crowd murmurs in support.

Ranchers return supplies to the pantry. Nick confronts Madison about lying to the ranch. Madison points out that even if Troy killed the Trimbols, no one would believe them. Nick agrees to keep Madison’s secret as long as she includes him on her plans.

Madison confronts Troy about killing the Trimbols; he admits that he pursued them to confront Mike over abandoning him, and then things "got out of hand". Madison tells Troy he could be the heir to the ranch, but only if he learns to control himself. She says that she hopes Troy is up to the task of protecting Broke Jaw Ranch from Walker. Troy says he is.

"The Unveiling"Edit

At the ranch, Madison informs Nick that Alicia is missing. Jeremiah Otto remarks that Jake, too, is gone. Nick offers to go after Alicia and Jake, but Jeremiah suggests he train with Troy before embarking on such a dangerous mission. Jake always comes back.

Nick cuts his hair and tells Madison he's keeping his enemies close, referring to Troy.

Jake returns to the ranch with Ofelia as his hostage. Madison yells at Jake for leaving Alicia with Walker. Jake assures her that Walker will honour the hostage swap, and that Alicia is safe.

Jake tells Jeremiah that Walker agreed to end the violence in exchange for bottled water. Madison worries about Alicia’s safety but Jake again assures her that Alicia is safe.

Madison asks Troy to help rescue Alicia. Troy hesitates, preferring to see how Jake’s parley plays out. Madison points out that he owes her a favour for not turning the ranch against him by telling them that he had killed the Trimbol family.

Troy, Nick and several militia soldiers sneak into Black Hat headquarters and rescue Alicia. Nick spots a guard approaching and tackles the guard, who Troy then shoots. Gunfire breaks out. Madison picks up the rescue team with Alicia in a truck.

Madison’s group returns to the ranch. Jake admonishes them for essentially declaring war on Walker’s nation. Madison admits that she convinced Troy to help save Alicia and accuses Jake of getting played by Walker.

Jeremiah, Madison, Jake and Troy question Ofelia, who says that Walker has kicked her out because he suspected her of helping Alicia escape. A guard takes her to the infirmary. Madison regrets letting Ofelia return to Walker, given her promise to Ofelia’s father that she would look after Ofelia.

Madison tells Ofelia she can stay at the ranch. Ofelia offers to help in the kitchen.

In the bunkhouse, Alicia asks Madison how they can be sure that Walker killed the Trimbols. Madison doesn’t answer.

Madison and Alicia wake up to the sounds of the militia screaming in pain. They run outside but Ofelia lingers behind.

Madison, Nick and Alicia slaughter the Infected in the camp. Nick sees Ofelia standing in the bunkhouse doorway and calls her name - Ofelia runs. Nick falls to the ground in pain and realizes that Ofelia is responsible for the illness. Madison chases after Ofelia.

"Children of Wrath"Edit

Madison chases Ofelia and pulls her from a pickup truck as she tries to escape the ranch. She punches and interrogates her for answers.

The next day, ranchers load dead bodies onto a truck. Jake Otto and Alicia tend to the sick, which includes Nick. Madison informs everyone that Ofelia poisoned the militia's coffee.

Madison holds Ofelia at gunpoint and forces her to drive to the Black Hat. Ofelia insists that the powder was only supposed to make the militia sick so that her people, the Black Hat community, could take over the ranch without bloodshed.

Madison brings Ofelia to Walker and demands to know what the poison was. He tells her that the poison was anthrax but says that Nick will survive if he's able-bodied. He warns that she and her family will die if they don't leave the ranch.

Madison tells Jake that the poison was anthrax and that those who don't die will be too weak to resist an attack. Jake orders Troy to gather the remaining militia, but Troy is the only one left. Madison suggests they recruit the ranchers but Jake tells her she doesn't lead the ranch.

Jake eventually agrees with Madison's plan to fight and instructs Troy to arm anyone who isn't sick. Alicia suggests they try to negotiate with Walker again. Jake points out that they have no leverage to broker a deal. Alicia hatches a plan.

The Nation rushes to extinguish a tipi fire started by Troy and a team of ranchers. As Troy's team distracts Walker's people, Madison and Alicia hitch the Black Hat reliquary to a truck and haul it off.

Madison and Alicia bring the reliquary back to the ranch. Walker follows with a host of soldiers.

Nick shows the skull to Madison and Alicia and relays the story he heard from Jeremiah. He also reveals to Alicia that Troy killed the Trimbol family Alicia accuses Madison of being heartless for standing with Troy despite the murder of Gretchen Trimbol, Alicia's friend. Madison declares that she's too busy keeping everyone alive to have time for feelings.

Madison meets with Walker and offers to return the relics in exchange for peace and ownership of the ranch. She gives him the skull of his father. He rejects her terms and gives the remains back.

Madison informs her group that Walker still wants the ranch and is giving them until sundown the following day to vacate.

In the bunkhouse, Madison reveals to Nick and Alicia why she's never taken them to her hometown in Alabama. Madison shot and killed her alcoholic father when she was a child because he beat her mother. She resolutely insists she would do it again if it meant protecting her family.

Madison goes to Jeremiah's house and tells him that Walker is willing to offer peace in exchange for Jeremiah's scalp. She puts her gun on his desk and urges him to kill himself. Jeremiah refuses and the discussion deteriorates. As Madison points her gun at Jeremiah - and hesitates - Nick walks in and shoots the man in the head. Once that has happened, Madison quickly begins to put a plan into action.

Madison walks up to Jeremiah's coffin in a barn and later, meets with Walker and places a backpack at his feet. He opens it and finds Jeremiah's head inside. He fastens the backpack, nods at Madison and walks away with it.

Madison wakes up in Jeremiah Otto's house and rummages through the dead man's office.

Madison searches Otto's desk, his blood stain is still there from the murder that took place and some of the drawers are still locked.

Alicia informs Madison that she is undermining Jake's leadership by back-channeling with Walker. Madison denies that she's been speaking to Walker, but Alicia doesn't believe her.

In the meeting tent, Jake urges the ranchers to forgive the Nation and work toward building a future together. Walker declares that his grudge against the ranch died when Otto sacrificed himself for a peace deal.

Walker privately asks Madison if she's prepared to handle Troy, should he become a threat. She assures him that she is.

Alicia finds Walker burying his father's remains in the desert, he says that he's doing it privately because his people would be angry if they knew what had happened, He tells her that he does want peace. She tells him to deal directly with Jake, not Madison, but he disagrees.

Madison pries open a drawer in Otto's desk and finds documents detailing water levels at the ranch from 2007 to the current year, 2010.

Alicia tells Walker that Terrance is going to asphyxiate and die from a crushed throat. Walker worries that other ranchers will follow Terrance's example and demands the second arsenal key from Jake so that his people can arm themselves. Madison takes Walker's side and urges Jake to let the Nation control the weapons and sweep the ranch for all remaining weapons. Jake reluctantly gives Walker the key.

Nick tells Madison that he can handle Troy, but Madison worries that Troy will kill Nick if he finds out that Nick killed Otto. Nick is not sure what reaction he will have.

Madison, Nick, and Walker go to Otto's house to collect weapons from Troy. When Walker heads upstairs to check the house, Troy grabs a gun from Otto's desk ordering everyone out. Nick stands in the way of Troy who fires a warning shot into the ceiling. Everyone clears out. Nick stays behind with Troy.

Madison promises Walker that she can fix the situation with Troy and Nick.

Talking up at a window Troy has smashed, Madison urges Troy and Nick to disarm, but they're interrupted by gunfire from the Nation. Troy fires back. Someone pulls Madison out of harm's way.

The next day, Madison and Walker discuss punishments for Troy and Nick. Madison tells him that Terrance, who killed John Hogan, will be dead soon but worries that killing Troy would only turn him into a martyr, so they agree to exile him. She forbids Walker from killing Nick or exiling him.

Jake tells Troy the punishment that's been handed down. Troy takes the news in his stride and insists that Madison is the one who takes him into exile.

Walker gives Troy provisions, a knife, a gun and one bullet, in case he doesn't want to live. A Nation warrior escorts Nick to an outhouse for imprisonment. Walker tells Madison that Nick will live. She and Klah drive Troy into the desert.

Madison parks in the middle of the desert, well out of sight of the ranch. Troy gets a hold of Klah's knife and stabs Klah repeatedly killing him, he doesn't stop when Madison aims a gun and tells him to. Madison fires in the air and orders him to go, he reveals that he knows about Nick killing Otto. Madison lets him get too close and he takes the gun. wrestles her. Madison regains control and points the gun at him.

Troy stands up, takes his pack and walks off into the desert alone.

"The Diviner"Edit

Madison and Walker look upon a nearly depleted reservoir. Madison tells Walker that Jeremiah Otto was aware of the low reserves. She insists they keep the water situation a secret in order to maintain peace at the ranch. Walker suggests they buy water from a trading post in Mexicali.

Madison and Walker tell Alicia, Jake, Ofelia, and Crazy Dog that they will be gone for a couple of days to secure a backup water supply. In the meantime, they instruct them to enforce water rationing across the ranch.

When they're alone, Madison reveals to Alicia that they only have six weeks of water left. She urges Alicia to keep the secret, to look after Nick and gives her a radio to stay in touch if things go bad.

Madison stops by the hotbox to give Nick some water. She leaves with Walker in a water tanker.

Madison and Walker make camp for the night. Madison touches base with Alicia over the radio and asks about Nick. Walker tells Madison that she is overprotective.

Madison and Walker drive to a large trading post at a sports stadium. Walker takes a canister of gold out of a box.

Madison and Walker surrender their weapons at a checkpoint. Madison reluctantly trades her radio to pay for their admission into the trading post.

Madison and Walker go in, the outpost packed with stalls and customers.

Madison and Walker approach Maria Lu at the trading post wanting 10,000 gallons of water. Walker presents her with the gold and offers to give her a dozen more canisters. Maria Lu agrees.

Madison spots Strand getting roughed up by a gang of men. She tries to help Strand. Maria Lu sees her and calls off the deal once she realizes that Madison is friends with someone, who is in trouble with Proctor John. Madison attacks the men and flees with Strand and Walker.

Strand leads Madison and Walker to a hideout. Strand tells Madison that he plans to reconnect with a friend who controls a dam near Tijuana, he tries to discourage them from going to the dam. They rest for the night.

Madison catches up with Strand in the hideout. Strand, learning of Travis's death, consoles her. Guards barge in with Walker as their captive. Walker says the guards had threatened to kill them.

A guard tells Madison that Strand must pay off his debt to Proctor by defending the front gate from Infected while chained up. Strand urges Madison to leave him and return to Nick and Alicia.

Walker tells Madison that he salvaged the water deal with Maria Lu and that they will get their water in the morning.

Proctor's men release Strand from his chains. Madison has paid his debt.

Walker confronts Madison about using his gold to pay off Strand’s debt. She reasons that the water tanker was just a short-term solution and that Strand can lead them to a longer-term solution: a dam.

"La Serpiente"Edit

Madison, Strand and Walker drive to The Dam in the water tanker. They encounter a herd of Infected on a highway near a number fo wrecked vehicles. Strand throws a beeping alarm out the window to draw the mass of Infected away from the road, allowing the truck to pass unharmed.

Madison, Strand, and Walker pull into a gated area, a scrap yard containing hundreds of scrap cars. Strand pushes a VW beetle aside to reveal a sewage grate. Walker does not like the idea of heading underground, but Madison reassures him this is the fastest way. The group descend into the tunnels.

Strand leads Madison and Walker through sewage tunnels but appears to lose his way. Strand tells Madison and Walker that he’s looking for a symbol that Proctor’s scouts used to mark the tunnel that leads to the dam. Walker decides to head back to the surface and leaves them.

Strand tells Madison that Daniel is at the dam but that Daniel is angry with him for misleading him on Ofelia's whereabouts. Strand breathes a sigh of relief when Madison informs him that Ofelia is safe at the ranch. As they head down the tunnel they run into Walker who is fleeing from a group of Infected.

Strand finds the symbol and points out the pipe that leads to the dam. As they crawl to their destination, they run into an Infected blocking the way. Madison kills the Infected with a hatchet then hacks its body into pieces to unplug the pipe, but as she does so the blocked up sewage is released and gushes over them.

Daniel, Efrain and an injured Everado race down the road in a water tanker with an angry mob in pursuit. Daniel shoots at the mob, and Efrain tells him to stop.

Daniel's group reaches the dam and shuts the gate behind them. Efrain admonishes Daniel for shooting at the crowd. Daniel sees Strand, Madison, and Walker emerging from the tunnel. Madison tells Daniel that Ofelia is alive and that Walker saved her in the desert. She tells him they've come for water.

Daniel takes Madison's group to Lola's office. They wait outside as Daniel speaks to Lola. Madison assures Walker, Daniel will help them.

Madison asks Lola for water in exchange for resources such as cattle or guns. Lola refuses to make a deal and orders Madison to leave the next morning.

Walker tells Strand that he intends to kick Madison, Alicia, Nick and the ranchers off the ranch since Madison has ruined their chance to trade for water.

Madison speaks privately to Lola and correctly guesses that Lola fears reprisal from her people if she gives water to "gringos." Lola offers to let Madison and her family live and work at the dam.

Madison vents to Strand about her predicament. Strand asks what she wants. Madison says that she wants to keep living at the ranch.

Walker leaves the dam and warns Madison that he is kicking out the ranchers.

Daniel tells Madison that he plans to stay at the dam to protect Lola.

Madison joins Strand at the gate to head back to the ranch. Strand tells Madison to stay away from the water tanker. Moments later it explodes, blowing open the gate. Infected flood inside. Lola’s men kill the Infected with help from Madison and Strand.

In her office, Lola asks Daniel how many guns and munitions they will need to protect the dam. Daniel writes down a number. Madison agrees to provide them with the required armaments in exchange for 10,000 gallons of water a week until the rains come. Madison suggests they make the first trade in five days at the trading post in Mexicali. Lola also demands that Ofelia show up at the exchange.

Daniel sends off Madison and Strand in a water tanker provided by Lola. As they drive back to the ranch, Strand admits he rigged the explosion.

Madison and Strand spot Walker on the road. They stop for him, Walker smiles and gets into the cab.
